What happens when the reduction gear dies---- and this does happen.

I fear that many folks concern themselves so much with maintaining their
engines properly, that the transmissions suffer from neglect--and sometimes
die from it.  Gear boxes are extremely reliable.  We have several hundred of
them that we maintain at work, and it is very rare that one of them goes
south.  When they do, it is almost always because they had not been properly
maintained.  If you avail yourself of the predictive maintenance
technologies that are becoming common in industry, you can almost always see
a gear box failure coming and deal with it before it ever shuts you down.
You should be doing regular oil analysis on both your engine and your
transmission, for example.

This is not to say that a properly maintained gear box will never shut you
down, but you can reduce the probability of that happening to close to zero
through proper maintenance.
