NCL Board Colleagues,

This morning’s Washington Post includes a column in which HRC responded to questions about her positions on education matters. I have drafted the attached letter as a response to that article.

If you all approve, I will send the letter over my signature as NCL president. If you don’t approve, I’ll send it as Deborah from Key Words.

Please let me know right away whether you approve of sending this as Deborah from NCL, and whether there are changes or additions that you would recommend. I’d like to send it today if possible.

Thanks in advance for your prompt responses!

Deborah

I agree - nicely done Deborah!
Are you thinking that you would also send this response to the Washington Post? May be a chance at getting some traction around noting that adult ed wasn't included in their questions so that Post readers could also be made aware?

Agreed, this is an excellent letter. I’ve attached a version with some suggested edits. None of my suggestions are that critical except one of them I feel pretty strongly about: I think we need to include something about funding in the ask at the end. (I added some suggested language.) Granted, just getting the candidate to give us a mention somewhere would be a win (sigh) — but we also need to be messaging specifically on budget early and often between now and February, IMO.

In addition to sending to the campaign (and I’ll get us the contact), we might want to create a version that we can send to the Post as a response to the column — Valerie might well print it, and that would be as valuable as getting it into the campaign.

Jeff

P.S. Speaking of funding, had a somewhat discouraging conversation with Democratic approps staff on the Senate side this afternoon about the lame duck. I’m starting to think that for us, a year long CR (a remote but not inconceivable possibility), which at least lock in funding at FY16 levels, might not be such a bad thing. The other paths forward worry me. I was reminded today that the Senate appropriation bill, because it was a negotiated bipartisan bill, represents the best possible education funding bill for  FY17 and in that we got level funding…
