Recently someone wrote about replacing the Warning page on the Garmin
76 with important info, such as name, address, etc.  I dutifully
saved this message and filed it where I would easily find it. Now, of
course, I can't find it.

I have downloaded the 2.09 version of the software into my Garmin.
Now all I need is instructions on how to replace that ridiculous
warning page with something useful.

I have gone back in the archieves but cannot find it.  It must have
had a different subject than I am looking for.

Thanks in advance.

Go to http://groups.google.com, and search for "Garmin 76 warning"

The second link I see there gets me to this message:

During the start-up sequence of my GPS it displays the text: "WARNING All
data is presented for your reference only. You assume total responsibility
and risk associated with using this device." When you know this text by
heart maybe this display pane could by used for something else. If you lose
your GPS, it would be nice if the GPS displayed your name and address. As
you know its easy to edit the firmware rgn-file from Gramin in a binary
editor and replace texts on the GPS, but if you make a mistake it may be
harmful to your GPS, and if you want to replace it for all languages on your
GPS it may take a lot of time. Therefore I made a small program, searching
for the Warning strings and replace them with my Name and Address. It seems
that the program works for GPS 76, GpsMap 76, GpsMap 76S, eTrex Vista, eTrex
Legend, eTrex Venture and eTrex Mariner

The program is still in beta so if you think its worth a try go to
http://www.milvang.no/gps/GpsWarn.html

The program is very defensive.  If it thinks it's not safe to replace a text
it will not do it.
A logfile will tell you what's done.

There is a thread of 16 messages or so following that - I didn't look
at them.

There is a lot of GPS discussion in the news:sci.geo.satellite-nav
newsgroup, although much of it is land-based.

news:rec.boats.electronics has some marine GPS discussion (as well as
other marine electronics stuff, of course)
