<Larry wrote: Wow! That's more electricity than we use in our all electric

B. Bob was talking about using this on a 56' Bertram if I recall.
75KW/day is less than a 30 amp 120 volt shore power cable (3kw or ~25
amps)....not a 50 amp or "big genset". This is why our 5KW alternator can
run the whole boat while we are underway without need for the genset to be
on.
A big boat in a warm area will require Air Conditioning unless you like to
perspire all the time. In addition most boats, the Bertram included, of this
size were not designed for natural ventilation. Then there's the security
issue of having ports/windows, hatches open as other have recently
suggested. Lastly you have the "rain dance" to open and shut them as the
rain comes and goes.....ughhhhh sleepless nights :-(
Given all this, again in warm, aka 90 degree temp, 80-90% humidity and 85+
degree water, it takes a lot of electricity to keep things cool. With the AC
on everything in the boat stays dry so we don't get the dreaded black mold
in the back of closets and drawers. Nancy's extensive book collection (about
3000 lbs by weight) stays crisp and mildew free....can't have those first
editions get limp!! Clothes are always fresh and odor free, etc.
Yes, we do use a bit of power but we also choose to live and cruise on the
water in comfort and not be campers. Swan Song is our home and everything we
own is aboard so our "stuff" needs to be cared for the same as it would be
on land :-)
Interestingly enough in the marina we just pulled into, which is filled with
mostly sailboats, everyone of them have rented hatch or window unit type Air
Conditioners and made boxes to get cool air into their boats. I would
venture to say that they all are using much more electricity than one of
these fuel cells could produce.
Until they get the fuel cells upwards of the same power you get from a 30
amp 120 volt cable I think they are a big waste of money. For the $10K price
you can get a solar panel array that would produce more than the current
crop of commercial fuel cells and not have the need to forever be chasing
down "methane canisters" to keep cool.
If you read my recent post on the summary of our Caribbean cruise you'll see
that we used ~2/3rds as much fuel in the genset as the main engine. This
represents our frequent stops and anchoring vs. being on the go all the
time. In our case for ~$800.00($133/month) of fuel we were cool and
comfortable for those six months. For ~$1200.00 ($200/month) we traveled the
~2100 miles. In our case well worth the expense and within our meager
budget.
As always YMMV.....

Hi All
Looking for some advice and insight. I have a chance to purchase a 1974
Trojan 44 with twin Caterpillar 903 V8's (310 hp each). I have been
searching the web for some info on fuel burn rates, engine info etc, but
have come up empty handed. Any of the listees able to provide some insight
into this configuration?
Any advice would be much appreciated
