Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI've just downloaded the charts for the Great Lakes and installed for use with
Maptech Offshore Navigator.
It's a long process, but free is good.
First, go to:
http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/dole.htm
and get the index of NOAA charts. It is is easier to download from Maptech if
you have the chart number.
Better yet, Use one of the printed paper chart catalogs (Great Lakes is
Catalog 4) produced by NOAA as your reference. That way you can get the
number you want from the small scale chart in the catalog, and be sure you are
getting all that are available for an given area.
Then go to Maptech's free download site:
http://www.freeboatingcharts.com/
Click on "Advanced Search" and enter the chart number in the "charts by
number" block.
Offshore Navigator costs $100, and is a full featured program, works very
well. U S Power Squadron members can get a 25% discount by buying the
software though their Squadron.

The only Maptech charts of the Great Lakes that are free are the Lakes that
have NO Canadian shore line i.e. Lake Michigan.
The others are only available by purchase from Maptech to the best of my
knowledge.

Not quite - there are more free charts to be found!
I just downloaded the charts for Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Search on
1480 and 1484 (the first four digits of the chart numbers). A search
for Lake Huron (search on 1486) produced charts, but an error compiling
the download file - that's a problem on Maptech's side of things and the
charts are there. The charts for Lake Superior are also available (don't
remember the chart numbers) as well as parts of the St. Lawrence River.

Bob,
Thanks for the clue. There are some charts that do not show in the "Region"
list that are available - I wonder how many others can only be found by
number group ?
John
You're welcome - glad to be of assistance.
I've found quite a few that way. Since all charts for geographic areas
begin with the same digits, using those first three or four digits will
produce the best results.
Another way is to check out the large area chart to see which charts are
referred to for a certain specific smaller area, then search for that
number (both in your navigation software, and then on the Maptech site
if you don't already have it). .
The regional chart "books" are very limited, and work well for only the
coasts; searching by numbers works the best, I've found.
