Lightning

Hello folks,

Last night's great lightning photo from the drone
reminded me of a stroke recorded at Arecibo
some years back.

See  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFAEDgiQRnk

I was not the lucky guy who caught this, but it was a
great stroke of luck.

Of particular interest to me was the extreme slo-mo
sequence and the part beginning 53 sec into the video.
One can clearly see what appears to be a "leader" at
54 sec, and it's interesting to note the similarity of its
shape compared to the main stroke.  This would not
be surprising except for one thing: this pre-stroke
appears to have struck much lower on the tower then
did the main stroke.  It seems to me that if the two
had struck at such disparate locations on the tower,
they would not have the same shape.

My theory is that the apparent leader was some kind
of video artifact associated with the slo-mo process,
not a real event.  Do any of you have any ideas about
this?

Thanks,

Dana

It appears to me that the two strikes came from
different places, so for me, all bets are off
regarding the choice of where to hit.
