Folks
New twist. Marina where I've been for 14 years wants us all to have our boat insurance carrier to " name them as an additional insured". Seems odd and I actually doubt if any insurers would do it. Any comments or feedback. Thanks. Russ

That's been the case for us for years at Pike's Bay Marina at Bayfield, WI,
which is probably the premiere marina on Lake Superior.

That has been the norm for my marinas for years. Perhaps Al can tell us the
reason behind it.

There are 3 levels of documents here.
CERTIFICATE of INSURANCE:
Provides simple verification of insurance, but provides no coverage for the
marina. Not really much different from a copy of the Declaration Page of
the policy.
ADDITIONAL INSURED:
Identifies the insured and indicates that the insured accepts
responsibility for any damages the the insured actually causes to the
Marina's property.
ADDITIONAL NAMED INSURED:
Provides coverage to the marina to the extent that the insured has coverage
in his own vessel.
(see attachment for a good explanation of the distinction between these two
alike sounding endorsements.)
The Additional Insured really only provides coverage for damages that the
insured actually causes, & since the insured is likely responsible for such
damages anyway, the endorsement only confirms that the insurance company is
aware of this contract. Such endorsement normally should have no charge and
is easy to get.
Additional Named Insured on the other hand would add the marina to the
insured's policy and would provide most coverages that are provided to the
Named Insured regardless of if damage is caused by the policy holder. There
is no additional coverage provided on the policy ($1 Mil = $1 Mil, not $2
Mil).
This endorsement would cost money and an explanation as to why it's needed,
and may not be readily available.
I would submit that there are likely many practitioners out there who may
not understand these distinctions or may even use the terms
interchangeably.

Russ, the corporate owned marinas here always "demand" this.
My Lloyds insurer gave me a generic letter that basically says "NFW."
They do not push it.
