We had an incident last summer on Lake Superior. Several guys in a
go-fast bass boat with about one foot of freeboard were frantically
waving for us to stop, so we did. (They had no business being on Lake
Superior in the size and type of boat they were in and the condition it
was in. And they had no VHF radio). They were Texans who had come up
north to fish. Anyway, their huge outboard engine wouldnt start and they
were adrift. We were not in a position to tow because of we were carrying
our dinghy on our swim platform and the Texans looked unsavory in any
event. Therefore, we called the Coast Guard who went through their
lengthy questions. We stood by, about 100 feet away while the CG decided
what they were going to do. The CG finally got another vessel in the
vicinity to come and tow the Texans and meanwhile finally sent one of
their own boats out to check on the situation. My point however in all of
this is that the fishermen never offered one word of thanks, even though
they had flagged us down. Oh well.
