Trawler World List housekeeping 10/22/98

Ahoy, all hands!

Trawler World List has been in existence one year and four months today
(10/22/98) and Majordomo indicates we have 470 active subscribers in 18
countries: Australia, Bermuda, China, Columbia, France, Germany, Hong Kong,
Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Spain,
United Arab Emirates and Venezuela in addition to the U.S. and Canada.

The list continues to grow at the rate of .96 subscribers per day.

This monthly message on the anniversary date updates our numbers and covers
what I call housekeeping matters. As always, please feel free to comment
via a post to the list or in private email to me.

Trawler World Productions sponsors the list as a public service,
exclusively for the non-business use of private individuals.

Commercial messages, for-sale offerings and for-charter postings are
prohibited on the list, by an overwhelming vote of susbcribers several
months ago. Trawler World Online will soon be expanded to include such
services.

Advertising or any form of commercial solicitation is prohibited. People
who work in boating are welcome to participate on the list as individuals,
sharing their expertise when appropriate. They must refrain from openly
promoting or inadvertently shilling for their products and services in
posts to the list. When in doubt, switch to private email. Blatant
billboarding only hurts your own cause on a list devoted to the
non-business use of private individuals.

Snip those quotes!

Please, please, please do not automatically quote the entire previous
message when adding comments in a thread. Indeed, toggle off the option on
your email application that does so.

Quote only what is necessary for understanding or continuity. Often, no
quoting at all is needed. Rarely is there a need to quote the entire
previous message.

If you do quote, please ensure the quote is not longer than the new
message you are adding in the thread.

Unnecessary quoting is a waste of time and money.

Trawler World News

Subscribers to the list and related digest automatically receive Trawler
World News, the newsletter I aim to publish at least once per month. Should
you receive two copies, please simply trash one. We try to screen for
dupes, but some do sneak through.

Virus warnings

As there are so many other sources of information about viruses, whether
they be hoaxes or not, and as virus warnings per se are not related to the
subject matter of this list, let us not post or debate the matter on
Trawler World List, please.

What if TWList email stops?

Bounced mail is list email that cannot be delivered to a listee. That mail
is returned to the listmaster with a notice of undeliverability. As you can
imagine, if mail bounces from only a few listees each day, I can suddenly
be overhwelmed with 50 or more returning messages, on top of my regular
email and posts from the list.

A listmaster has no option but to delete the problem address. Many lists do
so automatically upon the first bounce. At TWList, where I am on the verge
of resorting to an automatic delete command, I let the bounces continue a
short while, in case the problem clears itself. But then, I too have no
choice but to delete the problem address.

Should your TWList email stop arriving, please check that your mailbox is
not full and that you have received non-list email. The latter will be an
indication that your server is working okay. If those two steps check out,
please send the message

ubscribe trawler-world-list

or

ubscribe trawler-world-list-digest

to majordomo@samurai.com to check your status. The message you receive in
return will indicate what's what. In your instruction to Majordomo, do not
include a signature, HTML code or any other matter, just the plain text as
shown above.

If all of the above fails, send me an email and we'll get you fixed up.

Please turn off HTML code

If the application with which you read and write email offers on optional
HTML code setting, please turn it off. When this option is clicked on, your
messages appear in duplicate and create code clutter for everyone who does
not use a browser to read email.

Please turn off HTML code for your posts to the list. Rich text is also not
wanted on the list.

On TWList, all we need is plain text. It's the fancy formatting that causes
the gobbly-de-gook that some of you are complaining about.

TWList digest available

Those of you who are being overwhelmed by email will be happy to hear that
a digest option is available for Trawler World List. Digest means you
receive posts to the list in one batch only once per day, generally soon
after midnight.

Subscribers who wish to change to the digest format need to send email to
majordomo@samurai.com and write

unsubscribe trawler-world-list
subscribe trawler-world-list-digest

in the body of the message.

Digest format will not appeal to you if you are active in posting to the
list or if you enjoy receiving email at several times a day. For lurkers,
and people who already receive a lot of email, the digest format is ideal.

Archives

The list archives can be found at at http://www.samurai.com/lists. A link
also appears at http://www.trawlerworld.com/list.html.

Signature info

It is a good idea to sign off your posts to the list with a brief signature
block, to refresh memories since introductions were made, and because we
have new subscribers coming aboard on an average of 1+ per day.

Signature info may not be needed in every post, if you are fairly active,
but let us not be bashful when it will make messages more informative.

Traffic on the list

Now that our numbers are increasing, it is time to take a look out how we
can all work together to keep the list enjoyable and worthwhile.

I'd like to share with you two private emails I have received:

Trawler List Suggestion: try not to let the chit-chat build up too much.
If the traffic stays as heavy as it is now, or increases, many people
(including me) will probably sign off.  A message or two a day is fun,
but 10, 20 or more gets old fast, especially if they mainly consist of
earlier messages with a line or two of comment added at the end.  If
this is going to be a high-volume list, you'll need to have a digest
form as well.<<<

I enjoy many of the postings very much but my email box, which already
receives business related mail, much junk mail (especially porno
opportunities, why me?) is now further clogged with personal responses
from one list member to another.

List protocol on most lists is that personal responses are emailed directly
to an individual. Only responses or questions of general interest are sent
to the entire group. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the trawler
list. I know that some people just like to get mail, but left unchecked,
the list will collapse. The weight of personal messages will cause many to
simple decide to leave. The longer this goes on, the worse it will get. I
hope you will notify the list members and try to see that the rules of
email courtesy and common sense get followed.<<<

The last thing I want to do is crimp anyone's ability to communicate via
the list, but please do give consideration to the ideas expressed in the
two quotes above.

To unsubscribe or subscribe

Send a message to majordomo@samurai.com with one of the following
commands in the body of your email message:

unsubscribe trawler-world-list
or
subscribe trawler-world-list

Within a day or so, you should get a pair of automated message asking you
to confirm your subscription request. If you use a signature block in your
email, please disable it for the confirmation message so as not to confuse
majordomo and cause unnecessary error messages.

It does not matter what, if anything, you write in the subject line.  The
list management software automatically captures your email address  and
that's all there is to it.

When unsubscribing, if you wish to continue receiving Trawler World News
periodically, please send majordomo@samurai.com the following message:

subscribe-trawler-world-news

If your email address changes after you subscribe

Send email to owner-trawler-world-list@samurai.com with "address change"
in the subject header. Clearly specify your old email address and your new
email address.

Email contact

You can reach me directly at gxk@interlog.com.

Please note that it may take me a few days to get back to you; I tend to
get a lot of email these days.

NB

Finally, please note that I will never give away or sell the Trawler World
subscriber list for any reason.
