A visit to Minesing Swamp today emphasised our recent lack of rain.
The area is drying up quickly except for the section along McKinnon
(22nd Sideroad). This can be accessed off Co. Rd. #90 just east of
Angus. Here several flooded fields supported a large assortment of
waterfowl, notably Pintail and Green-winged Teal, but also Blue-winged
Teal, Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead, Wood Ducks, Gadwall, Mallards,
Hooded Merganser, Pied-billed Grebes, many Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs. Sandhill Cranes were also found closer to the Mad River
off the 2nd Concession.
At the foot of Baldwick Lane (13th Concession) a walk into the
woods produced Bluebirds, Meadowlarks and Eastern Phoebe enroute, and
Ruffed Grouse, Hermit Thrush, Brown Creeper, Winter Wren
and Red-shouldered Hawk in the forest.
