Rollover: Thunderbolt

I have an elderly Trimble Thunderbolt that I use primarily as a
frequency reference. The date has never been correct (today, it reads
Aug 15, 1999), which probably resulted from the last rollover. Should I
anticipate any additional problems with the upcoming rollover?

This Thunderbolt has Application software version 3.0, and GPS Core
version 10.02. The Board serial number is 81737225, date of manufacture
is 10/26/4. Are there updates that fix the date?

Thanks,
  - John

Hi

Pretty much all of the GPSDO’s on eBay are long past their “end of support” date. In a lot of cases, even
when “in support” free updates were not available, even to OEM customers. The simple answer with the
TBolt is to run it into something (like Lady Heather ) that understands what’s going on. The display software
then corrects for the issue and (more or less) all is well.

In some cases a manual “update the date” process will fix the problem. That generally holds as long as
power to the unit is not lost. Once power cycles, you get to manually enter the date again. My preference
is to let LH deal with this sort of stuff.

In this case “all is well” includes that the TBolt keeps putting out a proper PPS at the top of each second.
The 10 MHz is properly disciplined. What happens around a leap second is up to LH since the PPS really
does not care about UTC / GPS time.

Hi

One device on that list is the NetRS. If you have one and are not on the latest firmware,
the upgrade is free and fairly easy to do. TBolt’s show up as “non-compliant / no fix / end of life
long past”. There are a number of other devices from various outfits that also fall into this
“no solution” category.

On some of the other gear the cost to do the upgrade could well be into the “yikes” range.
For most outfits there is a per device upgrade fee. You actually are coming up to date on the
entire firmware, not just patching the week number issue.
