This morning while at the Suffield Wildlife Management Area I noticed a thrashing in the undergrowth near me and spotted a Gray Catbird that seemed in distress. Just then the bird simply died at my feet. The bird showed no sign of injury so my question is what caused it to die. Poisoning perhaps?

Paul, I honestly don’t know. But there have been reports of sick birds in
the DC area. It sounds like poisoning. But what would a catbird eat that
might cause this? Could it be pesticides on plants or insects that have
been sprayed? Perhaps it was simply none of those things and the bird was
older. I really hope it’s a one off NPD not a pattern.

Paul, I was on Long Island photographing shorebirds a few years ago when a goose came flying in and landed in the shallow water right in front of me. The goose started bathing, flapping in the water and dunking its head and neck. It dunked under one time and never came back up. Died right in front of me!
I have no idea what happened to it.

They are working on the back area of the Suffield WMA; there were signs for people to keep out because they had been using some chemical in there (I forget what). I wonder if that had anything to do with it?
