General Delivery

We've often encountered problems with mail being sent to "general
delivery". After a particularly expensive loss, one in which tracing the
missing package was unsuccessful, the post office explained that often the
only post office that accepts general delivery is the area's main post
office. Apparently, depending on "return to sender" is not a reliable
service, particularly with packages. This is often not a problem in a small
town, but in larger towns the main post office can be a considerable
distance from a dinghy dock or marina. We've even run into problems when
the local, non-main post office told us that they do accept "general
delivery", but some of the employees apparently don't always get that
note.

Rudy,
Many cruisers I know use UPS stores as their mail and package service.

In our experience full time cruising, we've used St. Brendan's since we
became FL residents in '14.  Every hiccup we've experienced with mail or
parcels involved the USPS. We never lost one, but one was in delivery
no-man's land for weeks (a check for more than $1K- go figure- but
eventually returned to our PMB. The USPS could not find the Ft. Pierce
Municipal Marina.) Using St. Brendan's enables us to document a custody
chain, and if we have a parcel to be delivered where we're not sure
where/when we'll be, we have it delivered to SBI and held until such
time we are at a location we're confident can receive the delivery, then
we have SBI forward it. More costly, but for stuff you don't want lost,
it's well worth the extra step.

USPS is usually pretty good, but like anything associated with the
gubmint, it has its shortcomings. General Delivery is one of those, and
is not standardized as Rudy pointed out. Generally unreliable.
