Hello Ontbirders
Yesterday evening I observed a Whimbrel flying over Shirley's Bay at 7:00p.m. It flew over calling and heading south. There was a good number of shorebirds, 350+, with 260+ juv. Least Sandpiper, 22 juv. Semipalmated Sandpiper, and smaller numbers of Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs. Also, the number of Caspian Terns at Shirley's Bay was up to a record high 17. The Great Egrets continue to feed along the shoreline with 8 present last night (no color banded ones) and  48 Great Blue Heron. The variety of diving duck species was up with 1 Common Goldeneye, 1 Greater Scaup, 1 Lesser Scaup and 2 Ring-necked Duck. There was a flock of 130+ Bobolink along Carp Road  just south of the village.
Good Birding, Bruce

Directions: Shirley's Bay:  From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west to the Moodie Drive exit and turn north (right) on  Moodie Drive and continue to Carling Ave. Turn left at Carling Ave. and follow Carling to Rifle Road. Turn right (north) on Rifle Rd. Park at the lot at the end (boat launch).
Walk back to the road, and continue through the gate on the Department of National Defense property. There is a trail on your right (clearly marked with vehicle "No Entry" signs) which heads into the woods, and, eventually to the dyke. There is lots of POISON IVY along the dyke.
