Bilge counter installation

Trying to reinstall the bilge counter and have no directions. It apparently was not originally installed correctly as it did not work consistently.  I am not positive where the two wires attach at the bus bar with the bilge pump.  The initial two wires I have attached to the three way (On/off/auto) switch.  The counter is an Aqualarm.

My approach might be all wrong, I am an amateur electrician, but, my
bilge counter seems to count.

I have mine installed in a circuit that is parallel to my bilge pump
ground. So my bilge pump ground goes to a junction with two more
wires. One goes to battery negative or a common ground bus or engine
ground -- I don't remember the details. The other wire from bilge pump
ground goes to my bilge pump counter. The bilge pump counter is then
grounded to a common ground. My theory is that the only time there are
electrons flowing through the bilge pump ground is when the bilge pump
is in operation, which is when I want the counter to be counting, and,
it seems likely to me that the little bit of additional current draw
from powering my counter is probably still in spec for the wire sizes
and circuit breakers on my bilge pump circuit.

I have three independent electric bilge pumps and I have the counter
wired into the lowest of the three.

I'd be glad to accept advice if my approach is a mistake.

The counter advances every time the bilge pump operates.  Therefore, it
needs to be connected to the wires that power the pump.  Each time the
pump is activated, the counter is also activated and it's reading
increments by one.

Only one wire attaches to the switch terminal that connects to the
pump.  The other connects to the negative lead that runs to the pump.
