We started our trip from Charleston and have had several unexpected surprises
which have been resolved. However, there is one that I didn't anticipate
because I have not been in a situation to 'expect' it. This has to do with my
address book (in Outlook Express) and webmail. I hardly use webmail, but now,
'on the road', I find that I 'must' use it.
Here are the issues:
-
I am/will be sending messages to a number of friends will doing the Loop.
I have a Contact List I use to send those messages. That works fine when I am
land-based and connected to ISP. However, I have difficulty obtaining those
address to use while I am in webmail. Question: Is there a convenient way to
transfer/import those address from Outlook Express to the Webmail address
book?

Related to question 1: When connected to the internet (via some WiFi
service), I receive mail flawlessly. However, I cannot respond to those
messages, actually, I cannot send any message. I have been told by my ISP
that I need to change the configuration in Outlook Express to the Outgoing
Mail Server (presumably for that WiFi ISP) everytime I connect to a different
WiFi service. Is this correct? Is there a workaround?

for #1: I think Google mail may be just the thing for you. Can do
contacts and contact groups.
Can be web based or, in my case, I use a third party mail program.
For #2: never had to do that so not 100% sure of what is wrong there...

I use Yahoo for my mail. For $20 a year, you can have almost unlimited
storage, POP access, you can upload your address book so it's available from
any browser in webmail, and it has a GREAT spam filter. Check it out at
http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/ Whoever your ISP is, you may also be able to
upload your address book.
As far as the outgoing mail problem, I had to change my outgoing mail port
to 587 when I was out traveling recently and was hooked to another ISP. This
is in:
tools, accounts, (whatever mail account you use, if more than one),
properties,advanced, then set outgoing mail (SMPT) to 587. Give it a try...
if it doesn't work, set it back to the default, which I think is port 80.
Write this down before changing it.

It depends on how your webmail provider has their system configured. I'm
not a big fan of webmail, so I rarely use it. Many will allow an import
of mail lists that you export from your mail program on your computer.

It is because of spammers using ISP's as a relay to hide addresses that
most ISP's prohibit relay or outgoing mail that doesn't match the login
for the connection. If you're using a wi-fi connection that isn't your
ISP's, you'll have trouble using the foreign ISP's outgoing mail server.
If your own ISP uses authentication, you can specify the authenticated
server in your outgoing mail server settings in your mail program, and
use port 587. Ex: I use earthlink as my work ISP, and earthlink uses
authentication. So I can easily send mail using the earthlink
authenticated SMTP server from any wi-fi ISP I happen to be connected
to. In my mail account settings, I have my SMTP server set to
"smtpauth.earthlink.net" and the port set to 587. It works like a charm.
I can also use any of my other e-mail addresses with my Thunderbird mail
program by using the "virtual identity" extension which allows me to
specify the "from" address as well as the smtp server. So I can always
send mail from any "from" address anywhere by specifying the earthlink
authenticated smtp server in the address header of my mail program
"compose" screen. No need to go into the settings of the mail program &
change every time, it can be done "on the fly" for each message, if
needed. This message is done that way, since I am not logged on to the
ISP that matches the e-mail address I'm using. I don't think Outlook
does that, but I don't use Outlook so I'm not sure.

there can be difference in mail server setup.. .I've used 4 or 5 ISP over
the years (incl Bellsouth, BigDaddy, ...) and found that they all used the
same setup to prevent spammers from using their SMTP outbound mail server.
first, you need to make sure that you have setup your account to
authenticate outgoing mail (tools>account>server)
Also, most servers frst require that you access the mail box to retrieve
email before sending within a time frame... so if you are trying to send
emails before receiving, it won't work.
fwiw, never had to change port settings...
this works for me regardless of how I access my email accounts... wifi,
dialup, local network or cingular Edge card. the mail server doesn't care
how you're connected to the web...

We have our domain name hosted by westhost.com which allows me to use that
as the outgoing server, regardless of the ISP that I am connected to. It
saves a lot of problems and has worked fine so far. With plans as low as
$4.00 a month including web page, it is well worth it. (No connection to
company, just a customer).
gmail works fine, but I am bothered by the "context sensitive" advertising
you get. I wrote an email last week that had the term "hearing aids" and as
I was writing, I saw links for hearing aid companies appear. It may be
benign, but not real comforting.
gmail will import contacts using the CSV format and there are instructions
on their site on how to do it. Outlook Express will export the address book
to CSV format.
