Mahogany louvered doors

Fellow Trawlerers:  I'm converting an newly discovered hidden space to a
useful space by
installing a cabinet door. My problem is that I can find all
sorts of teak louvered doors but
can't seem to find mahogany any longer. If I
recall, mahogany louvered doors were fairly
common years ago but can't seem to
find them now.

I'd like to find a premade frame and door in the 14x14 size
without having one custom
made (cost). Any suggestions of vendors???

Sorry, I don't think there is anyone out there making stock mahogany
louvered doors any longer. I ended up having to make all mine. A good
router and a couple of jigs made it fairy simple. One idea I used was to
make the louver pockets open at the top. That way I could slide the
louvers out to re-varnish them. A drop of varnish held them securely in
place while being easy to break loose to refinish.

The only special tool I needed to buy was a tapered router bit to taper
the edges of the frames.

I'd like to find a premade frame and door in the 14x14
size
without having one custom
made (cost). Any suggestions of vendors???

John, a company called AFI manufactures all kinds of teak products and included in this potpourri are the fixin's for louvered doors.

You purchase the rails, stiles and louvers, cut them to size and glue together...  kinda nifty.

The only thing is that I've never checked to see if they have the same items in mohogany. It might be worth a call.

They don't... They only door the teak louver kits. I used one of theirs
as a starting point to re-engineer my mahogany doors. They work well but
are expensive and don't lead to efficient use of materials due to the
limited number of stile sizes...

There is a Thai firm which had a website and small ads in some magazines.
However, as with AFI, I think that all their products were in teak. Look in
the magazine "Fine Woodworking" as they often have ads for prefabricated
components like louvered doors and parts requiring lathe work. They do offer
mahogany. Louvered window shutters in mahogany are also available and can be
as rugged as door stock.
