TWL: Onan smoke

My 1972 12kw Onan tends to smoke on initial start. Why? After a minute or two
it clears up and is perfect. Sometimes during the initial start it "misses".
After all the following work, its a lot better, but we never did isolate a
cause.
Over three years  the head and valves were redone, injectors rebuilt and
double checked the following year, hi pressure fuel pump was removed and
tested ok, new thermostats and temperature guage added, compression checked,
filters changed and I replaced one faulty cyclinder glow plug.
By pre heating for 40 or 45 seconds instead of the recommended 30 seconds, it
usually starts reasonably, but every so often smokes a lot, although briefly.
Any Onan owners who have solved this? Suggestions?

Yup, don't look at the exhaust until it's been running for a minute or

two. It's fine.

I have two 25 YO 15kw ONANS.  They will not die!  Initial smoking is
probably from malfunctioning glo plug(s).  The smoke is from too much
unburned fuel at startup which glo plugs help minimize. So, logically, you
have not problem after she warms up.
