Let me clarify my slightly unclear language.

1 battery = 12V
2 batteries = 24V
4 or more batteries may either be 24V or 48V.

As others have said,  packs of multiple batteries are taped or otherwise
held together.

Where the arrays are a single series string the jumper between the
batteries are simple wire(s) with appropriate crimp connectors.

Where batteries are paralleled, there is at least one fuse somewhere in the
array which will blow if one of the batteries short out.  In a consumer
ups, this is often a blade automotive fuse either soldered or connected
with a crimp connector and then the connection covered with heat shrink.

Every APC UPS I've seen connects the batteries in series up to 24V.
Above
that, the battery voltage is either 24V or 48V depending on the model.

If you search for the UPS model number and "replacement battery" you'll
find a lot of third party vendors with pictures and often specs of the
battery.

Hi, I managed to find two second hand UPS at a ham rally but neither had
a battery pack in it

One, an "APC backups-ups 400"  works well with a single 12V 7Ah sealed
lead acid battery.

The other, an "APC SMART-UPS 600" seems to have space for two batteries.

I have found a manual for the "600" unit but it mentions nothing about
the number of batteries or if they should be connected in series or
parallel :-(

Has anyone any experience of these ??

Any help more than welcome.

Regards,
Dave
