Dear
Tacoma Art Community,
I received a complaint regarding my last 100th Monkey invitation.
Apparently I had misspelled words and used 'dumbed down slang and language not fitting
a cultured Tacoma
art community'. In addition the patron felt a pole dancer was not fitting
entertainment, shopping at the event was an insult, and the events had become a
big party instead of an appreciation of the arts. I would like to take a moment
to answer these points as the writer felt she was not alone.
I am Sue Pivetta the team of ONE organizer for the 100th Monkey.
Others help me but I am responsible for all of the items the person was
complaining about. Let me give you a bit more information so you can
fully understand and hopefully feel better about the 100th Monkey and maybe me.
The spelling errors were no doubt the result of rushing to get this off during
a busy workday at my company. I had eye surgery and one eye is
continually blurry and most likely I should not be proofing my own work.
I will endeavor to slow down in April.
I am mortified when I overlook a spelling error as I'm an author and business owner
My jargon and slang were meant to be lighthearted. My yoga teacher tells
us to do all things with a 'light heart'. It was with this intent
I write playfully with the 100th Monkey. This is a playful event - in my mind
The intent of the gathering is meeting others and those attending indeed do
that well. The entire evening is two hours, no more; therefore that's not
much time for too much of a WILD party. In fact most people arrive at 8 so it's
about 1.5 hours. Some people drink wine, maybe a few too many so I invited a
real bartender to watch them and she does watch them very closely and has
refused people.
I believe all the events have been a gathering of mature artists
and friends of art who enjoy the opportunity to gather without cost or
expectations. We also provide a venue for various types of artists who
need our support (musicians, belly dancers, singers, actors, composers,
filmmakers). All give their time for no compensation.
I checked out the pole dancer completely. She performed at First Night -
a family event. She is not lewd, she is clothed and teaches dance at her
studio at Opera Alley I believe. Maybe you went to her website so you
could see that she is a dancer and an artist. She needed the exposure and
assured me it is artful, not sex or nudity. She will provide a 15 minute
demo in a room that people will voluntarily go into on another level.
The other purpose of the 100th Monkey is to draw people into venues that need exposure.
I selectTacoma venues that need our support or some exposure. Sanford and Sons
is FULL of struggling artists and small business owners that need our
support. The shopping you object too had purposeful intent; "Let's
visit our local small businesses, let's see what they are doing and
support them." It's not only an antique store, if you haven't
been there they have many small business owners who lease spaces to sell their
'art' whatever that may be. People who make soap, clothes, hats, art, and
more are part of our art community.
I sincerely hope I have adequately explained myself and the 100th Monkey.
I certainly don't want anyone to be uncomfortable with anything I do or do not
do perfectly. However, I will say that the 100th Monkey is only a very good
thing.
I spell checked, can't promise the grammar is good; it's been a hard day with a
sick grandchild, a bum eye and heading for a hot bubble bath. I hope that
no one in the Tacoma
art community was equally offended by my spelling, lack of culture, jargon or
choice of venue or offerings to support the community. I won't apologize
for the Pole Dancer for as far as I can tell she is a sweet kid with a dream.
Respectfully,

Sue, you don't owe anyone any apology. Tell that person to take the stick out of their arse. Seriously. These are fun, community-building events, just as they are intended to be, not some uptight, art-is-supposed-to-be-snooty-and-elitist exclusionary crap. Unless that that person is willing to step up and help with what you do single-handedly, they can politely keep their trap shut.
Sorry, that's just how I feel about it.

Sue, there will always be complainers & nay-sayers--usually not the same people who put energy into orgaqnizing events, esp those people want to attend.
We think the 100th Monkey sounds wonderful, and are not attending solely because we have a prior committment for thaqt exact date & time.
But we'll try to make the next one.
Please keep building the arts community--Tacoma needs it, we as artists need it, and it certainly doesn't always need to be serious or "highbrow"---playful art is not only a good thing, but may be what keeps the arts alive. In times of scarcity (or even other times) the number of people interested in supporting art that's inaccessible or doesn't speak directly to them is extremely limited. Leslie
