Glenn,
It is very, very odd for 3 birds to "drop out of the sky" at the
same time.  Any chance of retrieving the bodies?  There is
a rehabilitator in Waterford, Rick MacPherson, who might
be able to get necropsies done on the gulls.  I can give
contact #'s if need be.

If unable to retrieve the gulls, and there are other similar
instances, the bodies should be retrieved a.s.a.p., and
refrigerated until necropsies can be done to determine
cause of death, or turned over to DEP or USFW.
I wouldn't rule out possible toxin or poison ingestion.
Regardless, such an incident should be investigated,

Birders,

I did not actually witness either event, though I
thought them interesting enough to pass on.

I was just told by a student that three gulls fell
from the sky and died on Friday, January 25th in front
of Waterford High School.  This happened almost
simultaneously.  I just confirmed the story with his
teacher.  One flew head first into the ground with
enough force to bury its beak in the frozen ground.  A
custodian took the birds away so I don't know what
species they were - probably Herrings.  Thoughts?

I have a large white-faced hornet nest in the
backyard.  Last week my father saw a bird go into it
at dusk, apparently to roost.  Has anyone heard of
birds roosting in abandoned hornet nests before?
