Hi all,
Our “B.W. Surf Scopers” Big Sit team participated in about our 30th event. The weather was nice, though windy!, with spectacular sunrise and sunset, clear skies to view the half moon, Venus, and Jupiter.
There was almost no nocturnal migration (we started at 4am and ended 7pm), and we missed seeing many common landbirds. Even so, we tallied 90 species.

The BIG HIGHLIGHT was seeing the very rare ROSEATE SPOONBILL, as it flew over the marsh, then down the Housatonic River with a flock of egrets late afternoon. This represented our 200th cumulative species for our Sit. Other highlights were: Snow Goose, Wood Duck, 2 Greater Scaup, 16 species of shorebirds (including Am Golden-Plover, 52 Oystercatchers, Whimbrel, 2 Pectoral & 8 Spotted Sandpipers), Common Tern, 2 Great Cormorants, Am Bittern, 48 Yellow-crowned Night-Herons, 57 Osprey, 8 Bald Eagles, 6 Peregrines, 5 Fish Crows, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER (also our first ever), 2 Rusty Blackbirds, and Dickcissel.

A big thank you to all who donated to the Coastal Center to support our effort!  (It’s not too late to donate. Go to the CT Audubon website, then click on Milford then events).
