I've never seen prices from Port Supply so that is very interesting.
How did you get the Port Supply account? Just yesterday they told me I had to be a business and once you apply you have to be approved. Does Port Supply have a catalog?
Thanks
Dave Hart
Worst Marine has become or source of last resort also. When we have the time
to wait we order on line from Defender or Jamestown or several others. The
prices are usually less than my Port Supply. The store manager here will match
internet prices so I sometimes do order from them although they don't keep
it
in stock. I weigh the cost of shipping compared to sales tax and decide which
way to go. Whenever possible I buy from a local marine supply and try to keep
some money in the local economy. Chuck
Wal-Mart carries relatively small marine supplies to include up to 1000gph
Rule bilge pumps. Their stocking is geared to what sells locally so your
store may or may not offer marine items. Likewise, our stores in this area
carry tons of fishing gear and a $1.00 (one dollar) SS folding knife (made
you know where) that is actually a good, sharp knife. Needless to say, they
are cheaper than West - just don't ask for advice. {;*))

Maybe I have just been lucky, but I have always found very helpful and
knowledgeable people at the WM's In my area, A WM Express as they call
it in Gloucester, VA and bigger stores in Deltaville VA. The prices have
to be watched for sure, but as pointed out here, they will price match.
YMMV
Be glad when spring gets here, I am watching it snow as I write
this..............

This is a good example of the price variability. I simply used Google
Products search and found lots of offers of this pump in the $26 dollar
range. For example, look at http://tinyurl.com/d76jqr and you will see
the pump for $25.43 and now you can stick even more in your pocket!

I just wanted to see if there was a significant difference between WM and
Seamar and I checked on an item I am about to purchase - a RUL20a 1,000 GPH
Bilge pump -
Semar price $36.81 + $8.63 shipping charge - cost is $45.44... waiting a
day or two or three of four for the package to arrive...priceless
WM price $55.84 (page 566 of 2009 catalog) - now add in the 6% sales tax
($3.33) if applicable - ...cost is $59.17
Difference -of $13.73 - Hey - 10 bucks is 10 bucks - but if Chuck is correct
(and he hasn't failed us yet) if WM matches the Semar price get it at WM -
same day - and put the 10 bucks in your pocket

Check out: http://seamar.com/
Their web page is not the greatest, but they carry a large inventory and
prices on items like paint seem to be less expensive than Fisheries and
Supply

Hi, I am also in Portland. I find West marine very expensive, and try not to
use them unless I need to. I also have seen their quality (esp West branded
items) drop...
Myself, I like Sextants on Hayden Island. Good selection, local company and
fair prices. They are also able to order things (like spare parts for my
Dickinson stove, Ideal windlass) that West Marine would have no ability to
do. Plus, folks been in the biz for a long time and have great knowledge.
Columbia Marine Exchange is also a good place, in addition to used parts Kim
will order anything you need and have it in a week. She supplies a lot
through Fisheries up in Seattle, and typical is 20-30% off the Fisheries
price. But not just them: Dynobattery, New Found Metals, etc...
These two are localy owned business, have fair prices, and I always try to
support them 1st.
I also look at BoatersWorld (is that store still open? have not been there
after the New Year), and Fisherman's located next to Goe's (next to West
marine in North Portland). Selecting is limited, but if they have what I
need great! Of Course ACE hardware. Aloha and ParkRose have great fastener
selections. Tochoma Screw for Bronze. HomeDepot/Loves, mostly for Plumbing
fittings.
Mail order: I tend to use eBay (take a LONG time, but can get stuff for
15-30% of list, of - not off!), Defenders, Hamilton marine, and Jamestown
(both out of New England area).
I have also fond that many items are simply 'rebranded' and you can purchase
outside of marine industry for much less. e.g.: Wire crimps are Pundit and
available for about 20% of the price of Ancor. I just replaced a water
heater element, $40 at West Marine, $8.85 at A-Boy. McMasters-Carr is a
great resouce to start with.

So, where do people obtain most of the marine supplies if not West Marine?
Great to hear Columbia Marine Exchange get an honorable mention....I founded
it about 25 years ago!
