Hi all,
I'm still debating what to do about my prop problem, excessive noise in the aft stateroom, sounds like water slapping the hull. I'm currently running 1800 RPM through a 3.83:1 gearbox to a 40x30 four blade prop. At this shaft speed, all of the prop shops that I've talked to do not believe the noise is cavitation.
Several shops have recommeded a five blade prop, my question is does anyone on the list run five blades? and what are your observations as far as noise and performance?
Thanks,
John Pounder

FYI, I have a 5-blade prop running on a single Cummins B6. A couple of
years ago, I had occasion to help take a twin sister ship from Solomons
to Stuart equipped with the NT standard 4 -blade. My subjective
observations: The 5-blade has more initial torque (walks more), is
significantly quieter, loses a knot or so in upper range speed.
Starting from scratch, I'm not sure which I would choose but lean
slightly toward the 4-blade.
