Many  thanks to Bob and others who responded. The message is clear to us:
forget the  cat for passagemaking - at least for now.

Regards,

John
"Seahorse"

I have customers who are selling their 58' sailing cat for the same

reason.  This very experienced cruising couple traded a Tayana 55 for
the cat, did the delivery down to Tortola  and decided to sell the cat.
They said no one had warned them how  noisy cats are at sea and how
"quick" the motion.  Their Tayana, they  said, was very quiet in the aft
cabin with a very "nice, comfortable"  motion, conducive to spending
time at sea.

The cat is turning into a  140' Dutch fishing trawler for the two of
them to cruise on, which should  have a wonderfully comfortable motion,
especially after the anti-roll tank  is fitted!!

Hi Everyone,

I've recently started using the peer to peer file sharing utility called
Emule that is available for free download here:

http://www.emule.com/

Once you download the emule software, you can then access millions of files
that are being shared by the tens of millions of people who have the
software already.

I've found that there are a ton of software packages and mapping packages
(e.g. MaxSea, Garmon, Emap, Cmap, Fugawi, Maptech, Magellan, Navionics, etc)
for virtually all areas of the world.  There are also many books and
magazines related to yachts, sailing, etc.  Many in different languages too.

I get the feeling that the sharing of these files may not be totally legal,
but the files are all there for the download.  While I wouldn't actually
download these for true use - I'm thinking that it might be valuable as an
opportunity to try before I buy.  Does anyone have any experience with these
files from Emule?  If you do try it - I'd love to hear people's results.

I currently don't have any mapping software system, but I'd like to learn,
and I'm wondering if this will work.

Any thoughts or input greatly appreciated,

Brian.

Sounds like an open and shut case of software piracy to me. The
companies that sell the E-Nav programs, books and charts we depend on
don't have such a large customer base that they can afford to be
ripped off.

No disrespect, but the try before you buy argument is the same one I
always hear from pirates.

You can arrange legal demos of most major E-Nav programs by
contacting the manufacturer.

Once you download the emule software, you can then
access millions of files

Past experience with peer-2-peer software (i.e. Kazaa,
Napster, etc) had some very, very bad unintended
consequences - it was perniscious and very difficult
to cure. Under the heading of "no free lunch," P2P
software has the reputation of installing hidden
malware, spyware, key-loggers, and other hooks that
prowl places of your PC that either you or your
operating system would prefer not to be prowled.

In short, installing P2P software is very high risk. I
do not specifically know of eMule, but I would
categorize it as high risk.

I have a question for Brian.

He will not not like or think of me as nice
after he thinks about his answer. As a
software developer and a former automotive
service manager, Brian, would you trust me to
work on your boat or car if you knew that
my tools were stolen?
By the same token, would you trust me to
not steal from you to have me fix your computer
if you knew that most or all of my technical software
that I was using to "fix" your computer was also
stolen?
I don't want to know your answer as I already
know what your answer would be.
Piracy of software is a very big problem
here in the US. In Europe it is even worse.

Think about it.

Good luck.
What goes around, comes around.
Be an example to others through your
words, deeds and actions. Another thought:
Are you example to your children?
Don't think they are watching EVERY move you make?
If so, you are deluding yourself and your children
