Pat and will begin the loop this fall, and part of our prep is getting email set up. I have two questions for those of you who are using the Verison PC Card:

Greetings,
For about 4 years now we have been using the Sierra wireless 555 aircard
with an Unlimited National Access plan through Verizon. You have noticed
that Verizon now offers several other PC cards that claim to get close to
Broadband speed. I believe this is what is called the "Unlimited Broadband
Access Plan". A couple months ago I lost our aircard and had to get a new
one. I looked at the other "faster" card options but stayed with the 555
Aircard. Reason being is that I also purchased a DA400 (I think) from Cell
antenna.com. This is a cell phone amplifier that will connect to our cell
phones as well as operate on the higher frequencies that the 555 aircard
requires. I was not able to determine from Verizon that I could plug in the
cable from the amplifier to one of the new higher speed PC cards, or even if
it would work. From what I could see there was no external antenna
connection. (Correct me if I am wrong). I can tell you that if you decide to
purchase an amplifier, at least the one we bought, it works extremely well.
In areas where the was absolutely no cell phone signal, I plugged the amp in
and POOF. Got signal!

Hi Mike,
We are not Loopers (yet, 2008-09), but we do have the Verison Air Card.
- We selected the Broadband Access Plan for $59.99 -- which is the same price as the National Access Plan (from what I could see). The difference may be the contract term (we have 2yrs) but I don't know. We currently only get NA speeds (~130kps), but there is Broadband speeds about 2 miles from us. We expect over the next so many months that Verizon will have a large % of their towers with the Broadband speeds, but we'll see. If we were just doing it for e-mail and a bit of browsing, NA is great -- no need for the Broadband speeds. But then again, at the same price it just didn't matter.
Also, I would suggest buying the KPC650 Air Card. A bit more in cost, but we initially had the 5740 (or 5470) and had 3 bars -- now with the KPC650 we have 5 bars. Also, the KPC650 allows for an external antenna -- we have just ordered a Wilson Amp and Wilson Antenna to help the reception as we cross Lake Michigan during the summer.

Quick question: We are planning on spending a good part of the summer in the North Channel. We have Verizon phone service and we also have the Verizon Air Card. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I plan on doing some work via the boat (I'm a computer consultant and will need to VPN to my clients). Do you know if we will have cell phone coverage and/or National Access Air Card coverage in the North Channel? We just purchased a Wilson Amp and Wilson Antenna to help with the reception.

We purchased a Digital Antenna DA4000 SBR They tell me the connection to the
computer or cell phone is wireless and the amplifier claims to increase
coverage by 50 miles. Apparently it is a 3 Watt 60dB Gain Dual Band Wireless
Cellular Amplifier / Repeater I purchased it for just under $400 from
http://www.brokenlegdave.com/ I have not installed it yet, but the factory
tells me it will be a huge improvement and it will support up to 20 cellular
users at once. Hum-m-m?
