The new free charts that everyone is writing about
are raster files, pictures of NOAA paper charts. The
Garmin BlueCharts are vector files which contain
computer data that tells the Garmin chartplotter how
to draw the charts. It is a big task involving a lot of
manual effort to convert a raster chart into vector.
It would be theoretically possible for some computer
genius to write software to convert the free ENC charts
to Garmin BlueChart format but it isn't likely, in my
opinion.
