Further to John Stirrat's post earlier today, the 5 Greater White-fronted Geese moved between the river and the main harbour in Port Hope today, Friday, January 26th. Then just after 4pm they took off, circled the harbour, then flew southwest over the lake and out of sight. A Mute Swan with the geese did the same and all the goldeneye at the mouth of the harbour disappeared, so what siren call they all heard I don't know! If the geese return we'll post again. Incidentally, all the geese had the pink bills of the interior race and Alan Wormington comments: " I suspect they are prairie birds, and if so they are probably very early spring migrants (as a result of that warm spell a while back). Couple years ago we had White-fronteds arriving at about the same time at Point Pelee, also during a mild spell." Margaret Bain Cobourg mjcbain@sympatico.ca
