Maestro showcases 65 glass masterpieces created by Tagliapietra during the past decade (2002-2012).  The works demonstrate the artist's evolution to larger works and use of bolder colors and patterns over his nearly fifty year career.  Six large-scale installations, featuring colorful butterflies (Borboleta), boats (Endeavor), seagulls (Gabbiani), two separate collections of shields (Masai), and Avventura which contains nearly one hundred opaque glass vessels.  Some of the objects in the exhibition were created at Museum of Glass during Tagliapietra's several Visiting Artist residencies in the Hot Shop.

Museum of Glass and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties have teamed up to host Zumba fitness dancing in conjunction with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move Museums & Gardens http://www.imls.gov/about/letsmove.aspx  initiative during Third Thursday ArtWalk in July and August.  Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in two brief Zumba classes at 6 and 6:30 p.m. and also make jingle bell bracelets from 5 to 7 p.m. to wear when they dance.  Healthy snacks provided. All activities are free of charge.

Feel the heat as you watch art come alive!  Every day, artists demonstrate the intriguing process of creating works of art from molten glass on the amphitheater stage, giving visitors a birds-eye view of their activities.  Expert commentary and a state-of-the-art audiovisual system enhance the experience by providing insight into the glassblowing process as well as the science, culture and art of glass.

July 11 - 15                  Davide Salvadore http://www.davidesalvadore.com/  (Murano, Italy)

                                            Davide Salvadore was born into a family of glassmakers in Murano, Italy and is a master of traditional Venetian glass working.  He founded and manages his own studio, Campagnol e Salvadore, where he mixes his lampworking and glassmaking skills in inventive ways to create a distinctive and expressive body of work.  He is a also founding member of Centro Studio Vetro, a non-profit association founded in 1997 to cultivate and promote the culture and art of glass.

July 18 - 22                          Robert Carlson http://www.robertcarlson.net/  (Bainbridge Island, WA)

                                Robert Carlson was introduced to glass in 1980 and opened his own studio where he has worked since 1987.  He has taught workshops at Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and The Glass Furnace, among other glass programs.  Carlson is known for creating narrative sculptures using paint and glass to create images and forms that are archetypal and personal, iconographic and idiosyncratic.  "The glass gives these sculptures form, but the paint gives them meaning." 

July 25 - 29                  Katrina Hude http://www.whidbeyworkingartists.com/Katrina_Hude.html  (Whidbey Island, WA)

                                Katrina Hude holds a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts and a MFA from San Jose Sate University.  Her early interest in visual arts began with ceramics and photography but quickly expanded to glass during her college studies.  "I enjoy the learning that comes with object making and most importantly I love to bring objects together so they can develop into a series. It seems to me very similar to having a thought and sharing with others that it might become a worthwhile conversation."

16 - 17, 23 - 24,                  A native of Gainesville, Florida, Ben Sharp began his career as a scientific

30 - 31                                  glassmaker in 1997, where he worked on various projects for the United States Department of Agriculture, the University of Florida, and NASA. In 1998 he made the transition to furnace-worked glass and has worked and taught at studios around the country.  Currently, Sharp is the studio technician at Pilchuck Glass School.

Hands-on Glass Experiences

Education Studio

Weekdays 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Saturdays 12 - 4 p.m.; Sundays 1 - 4 p.m.

The Education Studio is an interactive, experiential learning space that provides visitors with creative opportunities for hands-on engagement with the ideas behind the glass.  Activities are designed to engage all visitors, from toddlers to senior citizens.  Each month a new hands-on art activity is presented that relates to a particular exhibition or Hot Shop application.

Using colorful glass shards, stringers and frit, visitors can create a one-of-a-kind glass tile that can be used for a coaster OR two glass pendants/magnets.  Workshops start on the hour (45 minute duration); last session begins at 3 pm on Saturdays, 4 pm on Sundays.

Cost: $38 / $32 members (price does not include Museum admission).  Suitable for ages 6 to adult

Our Kids Design Glass program invites children 12 and under who visit the Museum or are patients at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital to design a glass sculpture. Each month, one entry is selected by the MOG Hot Shop team.  Two sculptures are created-one for the child designer and one for the Museum's Permanent Collection.  Designs created in the Hot Shop on the last Sunday of each month.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Studio Glass movement and the Museum of Glass' 10th anniversary, the Museum has organized this exhibition to showcase works made by Dale Chihuly in his early career.  The artwork displayed includes transitional pieces from local collections, historic Chihuly posters from the Mary Hale Cockran Library and the central piece, Persian Seaforms, a 33-piece installation recently gifted to the Museum's Permanent Collection.  Collectively, the works explore Chihuly's fascination with the sea and ancient Middle Eastern civilizations.

In collaboration with LeMay - America's Car Museum http://www.lemaymuseum.org/ , and in recognition of their grand opening, the Museum of Glass and artist John Miller have teamed up to create a collection of large-scale glass hood ornaments inspired by classic designs from various American automakers.  While the sculptures reference the original emblems, the finished pieces include elements from various makes and models.  The collection consists of 9 sculptures, half of which will be displayed at each museum.

Scapes presents a new body of work created by siblings Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana, grandchildren of Venini & Co. founder Paolo Venini.  The exhibition comprises four installations, or rooms, based on the Hindu belief that the world is a series of disks made up of wind, water and earth upon which float four continents in a vast circular ocean. The de Santillanas have interpreted elements of this cosmology in glass, creating spaces in which forms and colors correspond to physical phenomenon.  All of the works in the exhibition were executed in the Museum of Glass Hot Shop during two Visiting Artist residencies in 2010.

The Visiting Artist Program brings artists from the region and around the world to the Museum of Glass to work with the Hot Shop team to explore, invent and create with glass.  One work from each residency is retained by the Museum for future display.

The Museum of Glass provides a dynamic learning environment to appreciate the medium of glass through creative experiences, collections and exhibitions.  In addition to the Hot Shop Amphitheater where visitors can watch artists work, the facilities include galleries, outdoor exhibition areas, a theater, hands-on art studio, grand hall, café and store.

Ongoing Exhibitions Origins: Early Works by Dale Chihuly <http://museumofglass.org/page.aspx?pid=531> Organized by Museum of Glass Through October 21, 2012 In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Studio Glass movement and the Museum of Glass' 10th anniversary, the Museum has organized this exhibition to showcase works made by Dale Chihuly in his early career. The artwork displayed includes transitional pieces from local collections, historic Chihuly posters from the Mary Hale Cockran Library and the central piece, Persian Seaforms, a 33-piece installation recently gifted to the Museum's Permanent Collection. Collectively, the works explore Chihuly's fascination with the sea and ancient Middle Eastern civilizations. While the sculptures reference the original emblems, the finished pieces include elements from various makes and models. The exhibition comprises four installations, or rooms, based on the Hindu belief that the world is a series of disks made up of wind, water and earth upon which float four continents in a vast circular ocean. The de Santillanas have interpreted elements of this cosmology in glass, creating spaces in which forms and colors correspond to physical phenomenon. All of the works in the exhibition were executed in the Museum of Glass Hot Shop during two Visiting Artist residencies in 2010.
