Subject: [CT Birds] (Extralimital) GYRFALCON in NJ - 2/25 NO

The previously reported gray Gyr seen from the Alpine Viewpoint, NJ (just
south of the Tappanzee Bridge), was NOT seen yesterday despite 40
observers present. It seems the bird, from its behavior and timing of
sightings, is using the cliffs here to roost.
The bird could still be in the area but a Peregrine is present which may
be causing some friction and may be causing the Gyr to roost somewhere
close by. From published information, the approaching bird might not be
visible from the viewpoint if it comes in low, but with a good crowd,
surely someone would have spotted it last night.
It is likely the bird may have been in the area for a while and is hunting
either along the waterfront or inland, and returning to the cliff areas
from 3pm onwards to roost. This is typical Gyr behavior.
Since it is so close to CT, anyone wanting to see a Gyr should consider
trying for this in the next few days to see if a pattern is
re-establishesd. Julian Hough New Haven, CT 06519
