Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsA note of caution here about the rivers after a storm. We waited out
hurricane Dennis at Midway Marina last year( an excellent place to wait one out too)
However we should have waited a few more days after the storm before
continuing on down river. By the time we got to Demopolis the waterway was rising
fast and the water was full of debris. We held up there a couple days because
Bobby's Fish Camp still had no electricity and that was the only fuel stop
before reaching Mobile Al. We traveled on after hearing Bobby's had electric and
the water was still 30+ feet above normal below Demopolis lock. Although it
was an experience we will never forget, it would have been better to wait a
few more days. It truely was a wild ride down a wild river for the next 2 days
it took to reach Mobile. There were trees complete with roots still
attached, appliances, parts of buildings, and lots of tires on rims. The water birds
were an invaluable asset as they would ride along like flags on the logs
hardly visible in the swift current. The channel markers that weren't ripped lose
by the current tugged at the end of their chains just below the surface,
very hard to see, and a certain disaster if one should be hit.
So, if you should yourself going down the Tenn-Tom after a storm, don't be
in a hurry. Even Mobile Bay was like a minefield, littered with debris after
the storm.
