All hands familiar with Maine--

For a feature in Power Cruising, I am being sent to hunt for the best
lobster to be had in Maine at seafood restaurants and lobster pounds
accessible by boat, ie, with a dock.

What are your recommendations for such restaurants and pounds in
Maine, especially near Southwest Harbor?

Hi Georgs,

The best place in Maine for fresh seafood of all kinds, in my humble
opinion, is Harbor Fish Market in Portland. They're located on Custom House
Wharf in the Old Port. They do both retail and wholesale, and they'll ship
lobster anywhere FedEx goes.  This is your grandmother's fish market...out
on a historic and active commercial fish pier, wide plank floors, huge
lobster tanks bubbling away, fish boats all over the place!  If I can't buy
my lobster off of one of the local lobster boats, it's the only place in
Portland I'll buy lobster.

DiMillo's Floating Restaurant in Portland is on the harbor in the middle of
the Old Port district.  The restaurant is the old Newport to Jamestown car
ferry. It's a bit of tourist Mecca, but they do a great (and reasonably
priced) job with lobster, and their New England-style clam chowda is to die
for!  They also operate a great marina on site...within steps from the Old
Port's shops, restuarants, pubs, etc.  The big boys (megayachts) love to
make DiMillos a favorite stop, but there's still plenty of room for us
rank-and-file boaters, too!
