Just got a call from Patrick Dugan who saw the Black-headed Gull I saw earlier today.
He says the bird is an adult. However, what led me to think it was a first-year bird
was the amount of white and mottling on its face around the beak area, possibly a
molt into adult plumage?
Also the bill was appeared to be partially black, which also led me to think it was
an immature bird.
If my aging call is incorrect, I stand corrected.
Oh well, whether 1st yr. or adult, it was a great bird that offered great viewing,
even through wind-induced teary eyes. I did get some good photos of it.
It may well stick around through the weekend, so I hope more of you get out
to see it - it's too good a bird and great viewing opportunity to miss.
