TWL: RE: packing glands and stuffing boxes - questions from newbie?

I want revise and extend my remarks. <G>.

I said typically you would not visit your packing every day.  That's true,
except when cruising hard over a long haul (is "cruising hard" an oxymoron?)
When we are running up the coast and running 5 - 10 hours or more
continuous, I do check the stuffing every evening as part of my general walk
around the engine (or in my boat it's a contort around) inspection.  When we
are gunkholing around and maybe running easy for a few hours a day, I do
not.
