I'd be surprised if anyone besides a Russian icebreaker will make the
trip this year. The eleven-year sun spot cycle which brought the warming
we experienced over the past ten years is over. Reports I have heard is
that the artic ocean is again iced over. And, weather in the northern
latitudes has been much, much colder this spring than anytime in the last
ten years. Snow just west of here yesterday. Bon Voyage.

Sven's request about sailing conditions for the North West passage
got me
curious.
a Google search quickly found several commercial tour companies that
offered
cruises in the far north. This is in addition to the private yachts
that
have made the passage.
There is also a Russian Ice breaker that routinely makes tourist
type
cruises in the arctic ocean.
All in all there is a lot of activity snd th eCanadian Coast Guard
is
actively trying to increase their facilities and patrol craft up
there.
Somehow I doubt it will ever be as crowded as southern waters.
At least you will not find irate shore line property owners
demanding you
stop anchoring and spoiling their view.

Guess we will have to wait a few years to see if this is a blip, spike or a
trend.
Went boating on May 24 and there ws still a small snow drift in the ditch
next to the boat launch ramp. We still had 4 feet of snow in the back yard
at the end of April.
Maybe we will see a new kind of recreational boat class. The ice breaker
yacht!
Look at the positive side. You wouldn't have to haul out for winter storage.

Arild and David,
I might have known you jokers from up north and back east were
responsible for all this lousy, cold, stinkin, mildew promoting winter
weather we have been having in the NW Coast this summer. This is a poor
way to promote boating and cruising.
There will be exquisite tortures meeted out to those who are
responsible, assuming we can find the miscreants in the 400 inches of
snow we have had since last fall. We had more this week, so stop it I say.
