Re: T&T: Email Addresses

We are moving, slowly, towards pulling the plug & doing some serious
trawlering. Currently we have ATT for our internet service and our email
addresses are though ATT. So when we pull the plug on ATT, our email
addresses go away.

One choice would be to set up something like a G mail, Yahoo or Hotmail
email accounts but then we are concerned about privacy. Another thought is
the set up our own domain/web site where we could have email addresses but
that involves set up costs, annual fees and I presume some maintenance.

Any thoughts from the list about other choices would be appreciated.

I set up an account with mail.com a long time ago to try and avoid this
issue. You pay $20 per year to use the name and their service. The
problem is that apparently others that use this service send out spam
and then the mail.com addresses are all blacklisted. I have had problems
with this but still use the address.

A better choice is to register a .com in your name and use this site to
forward the email to gmail or something similar. If you get mad at Gmail
or want to use something else like ATT, then you just have to log on to
your website hosting site and change the forward. I have used a outfit
for a number of years named DomainPeople.com to host frankburrows.com
for $25 per year. This includes email addresses and forwarding. I don't
have a webpage set up but if I ever wanted to do so I already own the
address. There are lots of other companies selling domain names and some
may be cheaper or include a basic 1 page website.

I did some research and the premier email hosting service seems to be
RackSpace.com. They offer a service for $2 per month. We use their
business service for the business but it is $10 monthly

So when we pull the plug on ATT, our email addresses go away. <<

When we sold our house last year we discontinued our ATT residence phone
service.
However, we kept our Sbcglobal accounts at no charge.  My understanding is
that we keep them at no charge.  Have you called AT&T to see if you can do
the same in your area?

BTW, our service was in the Dallas, TX area.

I believe you will not find that this is the case.  Rather, your email
will continue just fine.  Mine was originally with BellSouth that AT&T
acquired, and subsequently AT&T acquired Yahoo. Although my email still
is a BellSouth one, it is in reality run by Yahoo, and yours will be
also I am fairly sure.  AT&T has mushed them all together, but retained
the original @ designation.
Best regards,
Ken Bloomfield
