What are "flag" terminal posts?
Flag terminals are flat-sided lead terminals with a hole in them
so you can use lug ends on your battery cables.
Electric tow motors, fork lifts, and other industrial equipment
use flag terminals.
You can find them on the little lawn mower tractor batteries.
They give you more contact area than those wimpy
wing-nut top terminal posts and are easier to attach
and remove than the round terminal posts. It is also
easier to keep the flags clean than it is with the
familiar round clamping stlye.
It is very easy to connect big banks together by
simply using lug terminals - just bolt them together.
Flag terminals are a pleasure to work with and the
automotive round terminal clamps are a nightmare.
Raise your hand if you have ever cursed while trying
to remove the round clamp with its stripped bolt.
OOPHS - just broke the battery terminal because
the "terminal puller" was lost in the garage!
With flags no specical tools are needed to remove
clamps or to clean the inside of the clamps.
Deka-East Penn (West Marine's new supplier), Exide
and others offer the option of flag terminals. Look in
the Yellow Pages for your local industrial battery outlet.
They will have the better batteries available with flags.
You may also be surprised that the industrial outlets
may charge less money for more battery.
