Discussion and technical support related to USRP, UHD, RFNoC
View all threadsHi
I went to the Ettus website today and noticed that the B200 and B210 are now green. They were originally white.
Is there any reason for the change, and is that the only change?
Thanks.
I think this was addressed on this list a few days ago.
The new production boards happen to be green, rather than a white
full-board silkscreen.
There are minor layout changes, driven mostly by the change to the USB
connector to a
large-size 'B' connector, away from the "micro" B connector on the
white units.
Also, on B210, there is a GPIO connector, and the power LED is now dual
colour to indicate USB-vs-external power.
The new front/rear panel layouts are available here:
http://files.ettus.com/b2x0_enclosure/
Cheers

I also more like the white color than the new green version. But the green
one has four corner holes, it's convenient to make an encloser for it. :)

Be happy to receive the new one, the large USB connector is much more durable, and it can be replaced much more easily.
I killed the µUSb connector of my bladeRF by mopletely ripping it off the PCB, together with the pads :( A stiff USB cable wiped the PCB off the table, I caught it in the air and killed the connector. Of course this happens on the first day of a holiday, leaving me the next ten days without SDR grrr Had to do real microsurgery, stereo microscope, thin wires, and lots of two component glue, to repair this. Costs were 1.25 EUR for the connector, and a whole lunch break of 30 minutes for the repair. Guess it will not survive a second such incident, and I really hope this will not happen to my white B210, obviously one of the last “old ones”.
@Ettus, did you experience similar customer reports, or why did you finally go to the larger connector? Anyway, a wise decision :) Wish it had been made earlier.
Ralph.

There were a few reports of connectors "leaving the building" under
not-unusual stress. So, it was decided to move to the larger connector.
I had exactly the same issue with a HamItUp a couple of years
back--and again, within hours of my receiving it, knocked the board with
a stiff USB cable attached, which neatly sheared-off the uUSB
connector. NooElec updated to a standard "B" connector after that.
My sense is that uUSB connectors (and to a lesser degree, mini-USB)
really shine in situations like smart phones, where the connector is
surrounded
by enclosure, and is very unlikely to experience any shear forces.
For naked boards, perhaps not such a good idea. One lives and learns.
Ralph.
