Adding a fuel return line

After some investigation, I have discovered that I do not have a fuel
return line to the starboard tank. I am considering having one
added.  I assume that I will just have someone add the fitting at the
tank and then I will plumb the rest.

Questions:

  1. is installing a fitting a relatively straightforward procedure?
  2. if the tank is drilled or cut to accomodate the return fitting, do I
just assume that any metal that might get into the tank will be
taken care of by the filter?
  3. since there is so little clearance between the top of the tank and
the cockpit (maybe 2"), would it be a problem to install the return
on the side near the top of the tank?

Any and all suggestions welcome...

Mike

Mike, you do not need a second return line if you have a equalizing line
between the two tanks. This line will keep both tanks equal, and if you
keep the valving closed, you can open the valves occasionally.

If you have a Lehman engine the return is so small it's not worth
worrying about.
