I had an interesting experience today. We pulled up the fuel dock to take
on fuel for a day trip this morning. A sail boat was already there taking
on fuel. I put about $100 of fuel aboard. The sail boat put $150 aboard.
I don't know how long that will last him, but I thought it ironic that a
ragbagger would buy more fuel than an old stinkpot driver.

He really felt sorry for you Dave, he knew that you would be burning your
$100 just going out for the day and returning to the fuel dock.
Did he mention that he was just buying ballast? Fuel is a great way to
ballast a sailboat.
I have both sail and trawler. This year the sailboat has priority. I
remember a sportfish having to fuel up before leaving Isle Royale since he
only had 60 gallons. We have a hard time to use up 12 gallons on the
sailboat in a season of 500-600 miles.

This year, it actually is cheaper for me to have two boats, but I must give
you some history to put it into perspective.
We purchased Sanuk (the sailboat) in 1978 for $15,000 when I was making
$17,000. I had been on a sailboat once in my life and knew I would love it.
We have used it to raise our children (now adults), voyage with friends, and
make many trips (day or night) across Lake Superior to Isle Royale National
Park, the Apostle Islands, and trailer/sail parts of northern Lake Michigan.
Sanuk is a part of this family and we will sail with our grandchildren this
summer. Sanuk also is an avid Lake Trout and Salmon fishing boat at over 20
miles per gallon of diesel - I am three miles from the open waters of Lake
Superior. The mileage gets even better when the fish bite when under sail.
Sanuk will, again this year, be Committee Boat for the International Race
from Thunder Bay, Ontario to Houghton, MI. in August. I spent about $350
this year to overhaul the engine on the sailboat.
In 1998 I designed, permitted and built my own dock and boat house for a
cost of about $13,000. The dock is 58 feet by 8 feet w/ power and water, so
there is ample room for both boats at a "slip rate" which is really in
budget. Insurance on the sail boat is $96/year, so well within budget as
well.
The Grand Banks 32 (Superior Dreams) is a 1972 woody that was purchased for
and completed the "Great Loop" in 2006-07. I plan to keep the Grand Banks
and continue with the restoration.
The Admiral needed some time with hands in the soil this year, so with many
restoration projects on the Banks, home projects that accumulated after
being gone for a year, and the Admiral in the garden, the decision has been
made to give Superior Dreams a "rest" until at least later this summer.
I would agree with your questions on cost if I was not fortunate enough to
have my own dock and able to do my own work on boats etc.

i'm another closet ragboter... it's not about saving fuel, it's about the
fun of sailing! If i could trade my boat for a comfortable sail boat, i'd
do it in a heartbeat. In fact, we've had the Hobie 16 tied to the stern
since last week, using it everyday...
and speaking of sail, I notice the prices of cruising cats have gone thru
the roof in the past year. There is almost nothing in the 40' under 200k on
YW (east coast) regardless of age.

I've noticed that for the most part, sailboats on Lake Michigan seem to
run under power often. We just returned from a two week vacation that
took us almost 700 miles through northern Lake Michigan and Green Bay.
The Chicago to Mackinaw race was during that time and I noticed that
many of the sail boats returning from Mackinaw were running under power
This guy probably was on a schedule of some sort.
