I have used distilled water exclusively for the past
several years and have had no battery problems. In the
past I have used tap water and also had no problems.
On one of my prior boats I had two six volt battery's
wired as one twelve. I kept them charged, cleaned the
tops occasionally, and refilled them with tap water as
required. When I sold the boat twelve years later they
were still starting the 318 Chrysler the same as when
they were new.

There is of course tap water and there is tap water. A few years ago I lived in British Columbia. Our tap water came straight from a glacier and was so pure that you couldn't use it in those small home vaporizers. We had to add salt or soda to get the
electrolytic process going. Water kettles etc had no mineral scale, even after years of use. No-one ever used bottled or distilled water for their batteries. Now that was tap water!
