GREENSBORO - Students and faculty of Bennett College joined in a "readout" Monday at the Holgate Library. They read excerpts from books by and about African-Americans that once were challenged or banned.
Organizers said it was an important lesson.
"It first of all gives them an understanding of what it is to be able to read, to have the freedom to read, to make those choices for yourself and it also allows them to be exposed to a number of works by and about African-Americans that many of them may not have been exposed to before," said Dr. Gwendolyn Bookman, Director of the Center for Global Studies.
The event was part of National Banned Books Week and also included displays about censorship.
