Make sure the rabbit ears incorporate a UHF element.
HDTV is broadcast on UHF frequencies. Typically it is a smaller antenna than VHF 'rabbit ears'.

Steve:
I have a Shakespeare omni-directional and if I am anchored out on the
Wye or in St Michaels I can get most of the Baltimore and Washington DC
channels. Not sure that there is a big difference between the available
choices. Mounting it as high as possible is helpful.
You might want to get a set of the old rabbit ears and see how you do
with those. If they do about the same you may not be able to improve the
reception. If it is a lot better then it makes sense to replace the
existing antenna and wiring. The new digital channels are easier to
receive as opposed to the old analog system.
