SCC Members,

Check out this link to Bicycle Colorado’s summary of the 2018 legislative session… https://www.bicyclecolorado.org/bike-news/2018-legislative-session/

I’m especially excited about  Senate Bill 144 - The safety stop bill.  The safety stop allows bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield and red lights as stop signs if the coast is clear.  Finally!!!

Check out all of the great progress Bicycle Colorado has made for Colorado cyclists.

Not so fast the bill does not allow the changes. But it permits a municipality or county to adapt a local ordinance to do so and it does not apply to state highways.

Hey Eric and all,

Just to clarify, the safety stop bill doesn't actually enact safety stops in Colorado. What it does is provide common language so that communities who choose to enact a local ordinance can be consistent across the state.  If this is something we would like to see in Salida and Chaffee County, then we will need to get a local ordinance passed to allow for it.

Yes, I should have copied all of the text of the bill instead of just the language to be used in local action.  It’s very similar to the Idaho Stop Law that failed as a statewide measure last year.  I’m excited that this gives momentum to us for common sense cycling rules.

I’m guessing that we could approach Salida City Council, and Chaffee County.  BV and Poncha, too, if Chaffee County doesn’t take it.

Is anyone interested in leading an effort to change our local laws?
