"Humm..... is a puzzlement."  (King of Siam)

We have a problem here which appears to be caused by the list's success. What
ever solution we adopt should not precipitate the demise of that success.

What exactly is the problem?

Shear volume of messages?
Validity of information?
One Liners?
Is the list a reference library or entertainment?

For shear volume of messages on the client side; Joe's sorting and deleting
takes care of us high band-width listees.....but doesn't address the
Pocketmail crowd.

For shear volume of messages on the server side; I need more information.
This level of volume should not be causing problems in a modern computer
system.

For validity of content; I would hope no one would sell the farm based solely
on information gleened from this list. Inaccurate and misleading information
are by no means limited to this list. The entire internet is ripe with
mis-information. That said,
this list is the best source for the best hope of getting a straight story.
Even if it took 25 times..we do get it right. {8^)

For "expert" advice; I go to church. There is a guy there who really does
know everything. Anyone else just has an opinion. Some more informed than
others, but none infallible.

For One-liners; one line from Al Pilvinis can speak volumes.

Reference Library vs entertainment; never underestimate the power of
entertainment.
At Trawlerfests, the crabmeat is as valuable as the seminars.

Suggestion:

This has been done in the past and I didn't like it but would be willing to
try it again with modifications.

The individual who poses a question or asks for opinions is responsible for
receiving all the answers and publishing them back to the group; all of them,
uncut in one email. This would involve cutting and pasting all responses back
to one single email back to the list. This might be  once-a-day or
once-a-topic depending on ????. That person would be free to preface or
suffix this email with any conclusions reached as a result of the answers
provided the original answers are left intact.

All topics start on the open list. Essentially, the list becomes Channel 16 -
the hailing channel. You move to private email for the discussion and back to
the list when resolved. As many times as is necessary to resolve the issue.

Hopefully this will lower the volume on the main server and not stifle
participation.

Comments, suggestions? I'll go back to my room now.

I would hate to this kind of approuch become the policy for the list.  I
know that personally I have come acrose an idea or two in a note that had
little to do with main topic.  Often when I respond to the off topic  I
will modify the subject line something like:  (old topic // new topic ) to
try to indicate the quasi related response I intend.

Another approach might be, as I think someone suggested,  would be to
estabilish subsets within the list . This would possibiblly require a lot
of additionly software code.

The subset could bo something like:

trawler-world-list-cruising
trawler-world-list-safety
trawler-world-list-engine maintience
trawler-world-list-living aboard
trawler-world-list-admirials views
trawler-world-list-old whats his name's views (this section might require
permission from the admirial for participation)
trawler-world-list-(and)  well you get the idea...jd

I think the 'delete' key is by for the simplist solution for now. The load
on the list isn't that heavy in my opinion. Sometimes one subject or the
other might be something I'm not interested in, hence the 'delete' key.
Cheers,
Dick

Traffic is what makes the list what it is.  I see some of the other lists
that only have a few messages a month and I wonder, why bother?  But the if
one of those few messages was the one I was looking for, it would be all
worth the wait.  I agree with Dick Schroder and a few others.  The easiest
way to deal with more mail than you want to see is just hit the delete key.
Why do we have to make a major issue out of a minor problem.  If you dont
want to read about generators, or have no interest in lehman engines, just
delete it out.  Simple!  What do you do with all the junk mail you get.  Do
you read every piece before pitching it.  I sure dont.  I do a quick scan
and if I dont have an interest, its gone.

As an international member of the list I agree with Doc Moss and Garrett.
there is a lot about local America which as no interest to me and I would
imagine other international users (where to eat on the ICW) for example but
I have a separate "trawler" folder set up in my rules which takes 90% of the
posts and then I skim and delete. As far as I'm concerned it's the variety
including some of the humorous one liners that make this list.

This thread reminds me of a blood letting. The cure is worse than the
disease.

Many people have expressed good and valid opinions, but they are getting
repetititititive.

I think everybody gets the point!

Now I'm the one with the scalpel!

That would not resolve anything, in my humble opinion. We would still
have the same amount of words only in a big lump and would lose the
spontaneity we enjoy now.
No, self-control is the answer IMHO. Quoting only a short line of
what was said before and speaking in telegram style. That is what I
would lke to recommend.
It's not the information we need to curtail but the wordiness, eh!
Cheers etc - George of Scaramouche
