I have this unit (link below) in my workshop. It controls the heat pump,
but I believe it would report temps without it being hooked up to
anything (other than the wifi network). You use the unit's ID number,
and go into Honeywell's website and set up an account. You then control
the device through the Honeywell website.  The website then sends
commands to the thermostat.  I created a schedule on the honeywell
website for the thermostat to control the temps in my workshop, and you
can also establish email notifications when temp limits set in the
schedule are exceeded or if communications with the thermostat are lost.
It's pretty simple to set up.
