Dear Colleagues,

Please join me in welcoming a new member to the listserv, Chang Wook Lee, who has provided this self-introduction.

Fields:  Ancient and Medieval Chinese and East Asian History (Political, Institutional, Social Elite, Gender, Ethnics, War and Trade, Maritime History, Funerary Inscriptions, Genealogies)

I am currently working as a Research Fellow at Korea’s Northeast Asian History Foundation. I have studied ancient and medieval Chinese as well as East Asian history in both Korea and China as well as the United States.

In terms of my research projects, I plan to expand my dissertation, “The rise of the Hanlin Academicians: The political history of the imperial secretaries during the Tang-Song transformation, 738-1082” by analyzing their role in other periods of China (particularly the Yuan-Ming) as well as their influence in the surrounding East Asian states, with particular emphasis on Korea and Vietnam.  Second, I also would like to investigate other imperial Chinese institution, such as the Chief Councilors, Secretariat Drafters and other Academicians, all of whom were closely related to the Hanlin Academicians.  Third, I would like to continue work that I have already begun on the social history of the medieval Chinese elite from which the Hanlin Academicians were drawn; this project is especially promising thanks to the massive number of newly discovered funerary inscriptions (epitaphs) that have recently appeared.  Fourth, I would like to undertake a study of upper class women’s history in middle period China, especially of women in Tang aristocratic families; in the past, such a study would have been very difficult due to the scarcity of sources but is now possible with the newly discovered funerary inscriptions. Finally, I am interested in studying the Geopolitics of East Asia in relating to the maritime as well as the war and trade history.

EDUCATION
