Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsIf you want the Big Apple experience, I recommend the 79th Street
Boat Basin.
We stopped there for three days going up to the Erie Canal and three days on
return.
The location is fantastic. The Basin is a short walk to Broadway, with more
restaurants, shops and sights than you can count. Subway and bus stops are
literally minutes away by foot, for further travel anywhere in the city. We
off-loaded our bikes and traveled up the excellent Hudson River-side bike path
up to The Cloisters and down to 42nd Street. The adjacent Boat Basin
Restaurant is a lively nightspot with great music and an active crowd (which
quiets down in the evening).
You have several secure options: 1) Pick up a mooring; 2) tie up to the
exterior floating dock; or 3) secure an interior slip. We put Voyager (44')
inside to avoid the wash from river traffic. It was tight since a portion of
the interior slips have just about the water depth we draw (3.5 feet).
We paid less than $3/ft/day plus electricity (in 2007). They do have a
pump-out, but it was not working during either of our visits.
I love this place so much that we always drop in whenever we drive or fly up
to New York City for a visit.

Also, the place is secured and we had no concerns about safety at all.
Bon voyage,
