For seven years, I have used a 300 watt inverter for various laptop computers
running nav programs on the fly bridge.
While most notebooks will boot and run with a 100 watt inverter, when they are
running, they generally consume less than 100 watts (50 to 75 watts in my
case).
I would recommend the larger capacity inverter, which isn't necessarily a lot
larger physically because of this reason - heat. The larger inverter will run
with less heat and will be more efficient. I never blew a fuse on any 300 watt
inverter, although I had a few shut-downs from overheating.
Here in Florida, we had to keep the inverter out of direct sunlight to help it
stay cool. YMMV. So buy an inverter with three times the watts needed for your
110 volt notebook running on a 12 volt inverter. Play it safe.
Another tip here about your PC running on the fly bridge. Many notebooks have
proprietary programs that let you turn on your computer's fan to keep it
running continuously. If possible, you should locate this program and run your
nav computer with it on all the time. Keep it cool. Martin Veiner
