Where are the PUPs?

I believe I have met many more passage making folk who are not members  of
this list than are participating. That is to say, those members who  are
actually passage making or have done so.
Despite encouraging non-members to join, not one has done so.  Certainly, not
everyone wishes to participate in such a forum, but I am still  surprised at
all the valuable info which is going to waste and not being  disseminated,
save brief and usually uninformative spreads in print  mags.

Any ideas on how we could get more real passage makers to share there
experience here?

John, possibly it may be that some of us are spending more time
passaging "or recovering" than communicating on a regular basis. I too
have enjoyed the knowledge spread around by many more knowledgeable
than I. Today it is 0 degrees and a beautiful snow cover here in VT.
The fires are warming  us as we have breakfast and I'm heading out to
continue restoration on an old Mini Traveler. Yes, some of us do take
land breaks! Safe voyage and God Bless - Ross 10&2

Depends on what you mean by passagemakers.

  1. If you consider coastal cruising (Chile to Alaska, Newfoundland to
Florida), island hopping in the Caribbean and Central America or from
Tasmania to Southeast Asia as passagemaking, then we're here and have
    been participating.

Many of us spend most of our time out on our boats, going somewhere,
rather than at home.

  1. But if you are talking about true blue-water passagemakers, with
the Azores and Hawaii as the first qualifying stops on east and west
coast of US, or in general, people doing 1000 to 3000 mile open water
passages, then those folks are likely out of range of fast, cheap
internet connections, so they are unlikely to participate in chatty
newsgroups. To your point, none of the folks I know who are doing that
    in power boats are participating.

So... not sure what kind of valuable information you are looking for
and from whom. I've seen plenty of posts on PUP by people who are part
of (1) above.
